The history of porcelain takes us back to the 7th up to the 10th centuries, marked by the Tang dynasty in China. The waterproof and translucent material – then called yao – was born from the mixture of two minerals, which remain an integral part of its composition: feldspar and kaolin. Today, porcelain ceramic body is composed by the raw materials kaolin, feldspar, quartz and clay.
Porcelain is made out of the four raw materials that provides it with high resistance and unique translucency. Because it is a non-porous material, it becomes extremely hygienic and ideal for very frequent uses.
Its delicateness and beauty make porcelain elegant, timeless and suitable for any occasion. There are many reasons to choose this type of ceramic material when you want something sophisticated, but durable.
The main characteristic that differentiates porcelain from other ceramic products is translucency. Porcelain is the only one which is translucent, a characteristic that comes from the fact that it is vitrified and cooked at temperatures of 1.400ºC, in a reducing environment. This process provides it with its unique brightness, whiteness and translucency.
The word porcelain is derived from porcellana, used by Marco Polo to describe the pottery he saw in China. The three main types of porcelain are true, or hard-paste, porcelain; artificial, or soft-paste, porcelain; and bone china.
